Clause 1: Scope
The document sets out quality models that cover AI systems and the services built around them.
What clause 1 is
The document sets out quality models that cover AI systems and the services built around them. It belongs to the SQuaRE family and adds AI-specific content; it does not replace the base standards. It gives a common vocabulary for specifying, measuring and evaluating quality, and a set of characteristics against which a quality requirement set can be checked for completeness. It sets no requirements an organisation can be certified against.
What the 2023 edition said
The first edition covered AI systems only. Its scope was a single quality model and an extension to the SQuaRE standards.
What the second edition changes
The scope now names systems and services, and the title is plural. The public abstract says the models give common terminology for AI system and service quality.
The FDIS text is not public. The change line above is read from the public draft, which is not the FDIS and may differ. No clause level diff is invented here. The ISO stage record is the authority for the dates.
Why it matters to the buyer
This is the sentence to quote when someone asks whether the organisation has to do anything. It does not. The value is in the completeness check: a requirement set can be compared against the model and the gaps named.
What to write in the requirement
Record the edition you adopt, the system and service scope it covers, and the decision that adoption is voluntary. Do not describe the model as a certification or as a legal duty.
Evidence a reviewer asks for
A reviewer will ask what the model is for and what it does not do. An answer that treats it as a compliance scheme is wrong.
- Scope statementA line in the AI quality plan naming the edition, the systems and services it covers, and the decision to adopt it
- Completeness checkThe result of comparing the stated quality requirements against the characteristics in the model
- Decision recordWho approved adoption, on what date, and what the alternative was
Where it commonly fails
- The model is cited as a certification standard
- No completeness check was ever run
- The adopted edition is not named
What to do before publication
Write the adoption statement before the second edition publishes. It is the line every later page refers to.
