Clause 5.1: General

Carried forwardISO/IEC 25059:2023, Clause 5.1Published edition 2023Second edition at FDIS

The product quality model is a modified version of the general product quality model.

What clause 5.1 is

The product quality model is a modified version of the general product quality model. New and changed sub-characteristics are marked. Some keep their name but carry a different meaning in an AI context, and the clause says which. Everything unmarked is inherited and read as the base standard defines it. The second edition aligns the model to the 2023 base and presents it as a table that inherits the newer characteristics, including safety as a top-level characteristic.

What the 2023 edition said

The first edition presented the model as a figure based on the 2011 product quality model, with the changed sub-characteristics marked and the rest inherited.

What the second edition changes

The model moves to a table aligned to the 2023 base. The inherited set is larger: safety is a top-level characteristic, usability becomes interaction capability, portability becomes flexibility, and new sub-characteristics such as authenticity, resistance, recoverability and inclusivity arrive by reference.

What is not public

The FDIS text is not public. The change line above is read from the public draft, which is not the FDIS and may differ. No clause level diff is invented here. The ISO stage record is the authority for the dates.

Why it matters to the buyer

The clause is the map. It tells a reader which parts of the model are AI-specific and which are inherited, so a completeness check does not stop at the marked boxes. The 2023 alignment means the inherited boxes changed too.

What to write in the requirement

Draw the model you actually use. Mark each characteristic as AI-specific, inherited or not applicable, and name the base edition. Where you rely on an inherited characteristic, cite the base standard rather than restating it in your own words, so a reader can check it.

Evidence a reviewer asks for

A reviewer will ask whether the map covers the inherited characteristics as well as the marked ones. A map with only the six AI-specific boxes is incomplete.

  • Model mapA one-page map of the characteristics in scope, marked AI-specific or inherited, with the base edition named
  • Applicability recordFor each characteristic, the decision to include or exclude it and the reason
  • Completeness checkThe requirement set compared against the map, with the gaps listed

Where it commonly fails

  • Only the marked boxes are in the map
  • The map is from the 2011 base
  • Excluded characteristics have no recorded reason

What to do before publication

Redraw the map against the 2023 base before the second edition publishes. The inherited set is the part most likely to be out of date.
